Our Twin Nursery Makeover: Design, Decor & Organization

When we found out we were expecting twins, one of the first things that crossed my mind – after the initial shock and excitement – was how we’d create a nursery for two. Designing a space for one baby is exciting enough, but two? That felt like a whole new challenge! The kids’ bedrooms in our house are fairly small. So I wanted it to be functional, cozy, and beautiful, all while making the most of the space. And, with just two kids bedrooms, I also had to figure out how to fit the three older kids into one room. After a lot of decluttering, organizing, musical beds, and making the most of our space, I’m so excited to share the “new” kids’ bedrooms with you! Let’s start with the twin nursery today.

Designing a Nursery for Twins

My goal was to keep this nursery makeover as simple and budget friendly as possible. While I would love to add a wall treatment or some more character to the walls in this room, I know we’re going to switch rooms around a couple times again in the near future. So I wasn’t ready to commit to a nice wall treatment quite yet. I just switched out the furniture and decor in here to make it feel more like a nursery.

When I first made over this room a few years ago, I chose paint colors that would complement different designs and make it easy to switch up the look with new decor. It’s been kind of a fun challenge to put it together so many different ways! Here’s a look at it with the three different setups we’ve had over the last few years.

The room isn’t very large, so figuring out the furniture arrangement was the biggest challenge. It’s about 8’x 10′. After trying every configuration we could think of, we put the cribs along one side of the room. That left enough space so we can easily open the curtains and shade. And I love how it lets in the full light of the window.

Instead of a changing table, we used a dresser with a changing pad on top to maximize space and storage. Add a diaper caddy next to the changing pad, and voila – changing station. It’s also nice to be able to move the diaper caddy around the house, especially in those really newborn days. I don’t know about you, but a lot of diaper changes happen in mom and dad’s room or the living room in those first few weeks!

The dresser was originally in the closet, where I had set it up for the airplane nursery a few years ago. But with the cribs against one wall, there was a perfect open spot to bring it out into the room. And, with fitting five kids into two bedrooms, optimizing space is the name of the game. Moving the dresser out in the room opened up the whole closet. I’m not sure if we’ll use it for toys, clothes, shoes, or what. But it’s nice to find some extra space!

We put a cozy chair next to the cribs with a small side table and lamp for those late night feedings and cuddles. Big brother also added a few of his own touches. He so lovingly painted a little wooden train and stuck a truck sticker on the trim just for the boys. 😉

We had two of these brown chairs out in the living room and moved one into the nursery for now. There are some great budget friendly nursing chairs available, but this one works great and we already had it! If you’re on a budget, don’t forget to shop your own house first. Sometimes moving things around and switching it up between rooms is all you have to do!

Simple Nursery Decor

I’ve saved most of the decor from each of my kids’ nurseries and rooms. Kids spaces are so fun and whimsical, full of mixed-and-matched pieces that make them feel unique. They’re some of my favorite rooms to put together! I always hold onto decor because I can usually find a way to reuse it in another kid’s room—and that’s exactly what I did for the twins’ nursery. I went through everything I’d saved and was able to decorate almost the entire space using things we already had on hand.

My wonderful sister-in-law also sent me the sweetest gift when I was put on bed rest for the last few months of my pregnancy with the twins—a collection of crafts I could do while lying down. It 100% saved my sanity. 😂 Even better, they turned into the cutest decor for the nursery! I made a cross-stitch to hang over the dresser and a little crochet elephant that now sits on the shelf.

Twin Nursery Organization

With two babies (and five kids sharing two rooms!), organization is everything. I had to get creative to make the most of our space, and these storage solutions have been game-changers:

  • Drawer Organizers – Keeping tiny clothes organized is no joke. I used expandable dividers and fabric bins to separate sizes and essentials in the dresser. Everything has a spot, which makes it so much easier to find what we need.
  • Baskets in the Closet – Diapers, wipes, and extra bedding all go into storage bins on the top shelf of the closet, keeping them handy but out of the way.
  • Bookcase with Cabinets – The bookcase at the front of the room holds a surprising amount of stuff! The open shelves hold all the kids’ books. The cabinets underneath are perfect for puzzles, games, and electronics like drawing pads and LeapFrog “computers.”

I couldn’t be happier with how the twin nursery turned out! It’s peaceful, organized, and ready for all the cuddles and chaos.
