The first room renovation in the new house is underway, and I’m so excited to start making this house our own.
When we moved, I promised our two oldest kiddos (4 and 2) that their room would be my first project and we’d make it super special. It’ll be a shared boy/girl bedroom, and I’m taking inspiration from one of their favorite places – Papa’s cabin! I’m thinking sage and blush for the boy/girl mix, woodsy, natural tones, and a forest accent wall.
The kids were so excited when I showed them the mock up!
I’m doing fresh paint all around, a stencil (or a couple stencils) for the wall, and new furniture & décor. The current flooring is actually in really good shape. It’s a nice, neutral carpet – great for a kids room – so I’m leaving that in place.
It’s crazy, but this is probably the easiest room renovation/refresh I’ve ever done. In our last house, I had to completely gut every room I renovated – scrape ceiling texture, refinish drywall mud & tape (or completely new drywall), new flooring, trim, install all new doors, refresh window frames, etc. before I ever got to the paint-and-make-it-pretty stage. I gotta be honest, it’s kinda nice to start from a little more finished spot this time. Not that I didn’t enjoy renovating those other rooms, but this is a nice respite from so much drywall work.

The Before:
If you follow along on Instagram, you’ve been watching the whole transformation in real time – I just finished the fresh paint and stencil and am getting ready to start on the furniture.
Since we’re converting this to a shared bedroom, a bunk bed is in order! I considered two twin beds, but the kids love to play in here, so I want to leave them a fair amount of floor space. I had planned to build the bunk bed (and even designed one with a full set of plans and all), but I don’t think I’ll get around to it this time. I’m feeling really strapped for time lately (hello, 3 kids four and under) and I’d like to finish this room before 2072 …
So, instead, I found a cute bunk on Amazon! It wasn’t too expensive and is decent quality. I may come back to build the bunk bed sometime down the road. But, for now, we have a place for both kids to sleep and I won’t lose my mind trying to take on too many things.
That said, I am planning to build them a craft table and chairs, a new toy box, wall shelves, and do a fun dresser makeover to their current IKEA dressers – still plenty of DIY projects and plans to share! And, of course, I’ll post the tutorials and plans as I go.
