How to Make DIY Velvet Pumpkins

Watch how I made these DIY Velvet Pumpkins and added a few touches of fall around the house in my latest YouTube video: Decorate with Me for Fall!

DIY Velvet Pumpkins

Fall is in full swing, and there’s nothing cozier than adding a touch of velvet to your fall decor! These DIY velvet pumpkins are not only fun to make, but I love the softness they add against the stone fireplace. They’d also be perfect as part of a centerpiece, in a bookcase, or scattered around your home. Plus, they’re super easy to make. Here’s how you can make your own!

Prep the Foam Pumpkins

Start by removing the stems from your pumpkins. Then, cut out the center of the pumpkin. If you have a crafting knife, that would be ideal. But I just used a small paring knife.

You want to cut a decent sized opening so you have room to thread the velvet through enough times to cover the whole pumpkin. About a 1″- 1 1/2″ opening seemed to work the best. That gives you enough room to thread the velvet but isn’t too large that the sticks don’t fit correctly for the new stems.

Cut the Velvet

Cut the velvet into 3″-4″ strips. It doesn’t have to be perfect. The goal is just to make it wide enough that you can kinda roll the edges underneath themselves to give the pumpkins some ridges. I just eyeballed it and cut my best straight lines!

Velvet-ify Your Pumpkins

Thread one end of your velvet strip from the top down through the center of the pumpkin, leaving a small tail out the bottom. Hold it in place while you thread the other end of the velvet up from the bottom of the cutout through the top. Then, wrap it around the outside of the pumpkin and repeat – up through the bottom, out the top, and around. Move the fabric to the next section, overlapping with the previous section slightly as you go, and repeat all the way around the pumpkin.

The smaller pumpkins only took one strip of the velvet, but I used a few strips for the larger pumpkin (pictured). For those larger ones, leave a tail out the bottom for each new strip of velvet.

Once you’ve worked all the way around the pumpkin, tie the two ends of the velvet together. Tuck the knot into the bottom of the pumpkin to hide it. If you have multiple strips of velvet, tie knots in the pieces that are most opposite each other to pull the fabric into the correct places.

Add the Stem

To finish your pumpkin, flip it over, add a bead of hot glue around the opening in the top, and insert a stick for the stem.

I used a couple branches from the yard and cut them into 3″-ish pieces for the stems. I used smaller branches for the small pumpkins and a larger/thicker one for the bigger pumpkins. If you want to take it a step further, you can add some twine or faux leaves for extra detail. I left these ones simple, with just the stem.

Style

There you have it – pile them in a basket, arrange them on your mantel, or even use them as part of your fall table centerpiece!

I love the pop of color on this year’s fall mantel. I found that vining garland at Hobby Lobby (in the floral section, not fall specifically) and wove this acorns + berries garland through it and stacked the pumpkins on top. Each pumpkin is burrowed into the garland a bit and staggered this way and that in my attempt to make it look like they’re kind of growing up out of the mantel. With the stone and the wood and acorns and vines – it reminds me of walking through a fall forest!

The mushroom candlesticks are one of my favorite fall finds this year. They’re solid metal and the finish on them is a bit worn, so they look a little vintage. I thought they’d be beautiful all through fall and the holidays!
