As soon as that first cool breeze hit, I knew it was time to give our back patio a little seasonal refresh. Whether it’s enjoying some Sunday football or roasting marshmallows with the kids, I wanted our outdoor space to feel inviting and festive for the fall season.
Clean Slate
First, we cleared everything off the patio and gave it a good cleaning. The kids used this space hard all summer and there was playdoh pressed into way too many surfaces 😅 We sprayed the pavers off, cleaned up the fire pit, cleaned the cushions (as much as possible), and got rid of what was left of the summer plants.
As we were putting things back, we decided to try out a new layout. It made the space feel so much more inviting and cohesive! This is a pretty long patio area, made up of two separate spaces – one with pavers and one a concrete pad. I’d love to add a dining table on the concrete pad eventually, or something similar. But, for now, we just have the paver side set up. We had those two wicker chairs and side table over on the concrete pad portion originally – a nice spot for morning coffee! But we like them so much more over by the fire pit. More seating and it fills the space in better!
Adding Fall Touches
I added a few pillows and throws in rich, warm tones, as well as some fall mums and boxwoods.
I love how large these concrete planters are! And such a good price for a set of three.
I sprinkled a variety of pumpkins throughout the patio and added a touch of Halloween with one of the DIY black terracotta jack-o-lanterns [tutorial here].
We already had the string lights up, but they’re one of my favorite pieces to cozy up outdoor spaces. And with the sun setting earlier, they’re perfect for soft lighting in the evenings around the fire.
Speaking of – what’s a fall patio without s’mores? It’s one of the kids’ favorite fall activities. And spring and summer and winter. I meeean, who can blame them?! We spend many evenings out here after dinner, cozying up with a family movie and s’mores for dessert!
I love putting together a good s’mores basket. Like a charcuterie board for s’mores! It’s always fun to mix it up with some options.
The Classic – graham cracker, chocolate, marshmallow.
The Peanut Butter Twist – graham cracker, Reeses, marshmallow
The Short & Sweet – shortbread cookie, chocolate, strawberries, marshmallow
And I didn’t grab ingredients for this one, but one of our Instagram friends suggested Ghirardelli chocolate covered caramel squares. Definitely going to grab those for our next s’mores night!
green throw pillow \\ floral throw pillow \\ rust throw pillow \\ plaid blanket
We spend so much time out here year-round, but especially in the fall. Now, all that’s left is to grab a warm drink, cozy up under a blanket, and enjoy these beautiful fall days.
Happy fall!
