This is one of my favorite boot storage solutions I’ve seen – inspiration from Ana White’s wall boot rack. And for a place like Minnesota in the winter, boot storage is very important! This boot hanger convenient, easy to build, and doesn’t take up too much space – what more could you ask for!

Just a heads up – the dimensions for each section of this mudroom are based on our hallway. Adjust dimensions as necessary to fit your space.

Tools & Supplies:

Lumber:

  • 1  |   2 x 12 @ 6′
  • 1  |   3/4″ Dowel @ 8′ (or 2 dowels @ 4′ which are available at Home Depot)

Cuts:

  • 1  |   2 x 12 @ 6′
  • 9  |   3/4″ Dowels @ 8″

Step 1.

Drill three 3/4″ dowel holes 1″ deep across the 2 x 12 according to the locations shown below. I used a 3/4″ forstner bit to drill the holes, which works great.

Step 2.

Drill two more rows of dowel holes spaced 22″ vertically.

Use a 1/16″ drill bit to drill the center of each dowel hole all the way through the back.

Step 3.

Sand the 2 x 12 before inserting the dowels into place to avoid having to sand around each dowel.

Once it’s all sanded, glue the 3/4″ dowels into place.

After the wood glue sets, drill a 2″ screw into the back of each dowel through the pre-drilled hole from Step 2.

Stain and finish the boot rack as desired. I used Varathane Weathered Wood Acclerator in brown, followed by Varathane triple thick spray on polyurethane.

I attached the boot hanger directly into the studs in the wall. Feel free to anchor it however you see fit. Use drywall anchors if necessary.

I finished things off with a set of plastic storage baskets for hats, gloves, scarves, etc.
